Year 3

Year 3 marks a significant transition for children as they enter Key Stage 2. During this time, your child will be exposed to a variety of texts at school, and there are some fantastic books that can help foster their reading habit. As they grow into confident and independent readers, they may seek out more books to enjoy for pleasure. Every child progresses at their own pace, and some may still be using phonics to segment and blend words. Regardless of where your child is in their reading journey, it’s crucial to continue reading to them and listening to them every day.

“The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown is a superb read, written with short chapters that can help children feel success more quickly, especially those who find too much text overwhelming. The story follows a robot named Roz, who finds herself on a remote island. As she navigates her new environment, she learns the importance of friendship and the natural world around her. This book is part of a trilogy series and has captivated many classes I have taught in this year group.

Another book with a similar theme of robots is “The Iron Man” by Ted Hughes. While there have been many published versions of this fantastic story, Chris Mould’s beautifully colorful illustrations truly bring the book to life.

“The Boy Who Grew Dragons” is a charming children’s book about Tomas, who grows a dragon from a mysterious plant. As the dragon, Flicker, grows, Tomas learns about the joys and challenges of raising a dragon. The book is filled with humor, heart, and a touch of magic, making it a charming read for children and adults alike.
