Year 2

In this year, you might notice changes in your child’s reading ability, especially in their development of phonics. They will also begin to develop their comprehension skills. Comprehension skills are a critical aspect of reading development. They involve the ability to understand and interpret the meaning of a text, including the main ideas, details, and underlying messages. Children benefit greatly from discussing books. Encourage your child to talk about the books they read, using the text and pictures to explain their answers.

Here are some of my favourites from my Year 2 list. “The Incredible Book Eating Boy” by Oliver Jeffers, “Meerkat Mail” by Emily Gravett, and “Ruby’s Worry” by Tom Percival.

Tom Percival’s books often explore themes of empathy, kindness and emotional well-bring. His stories are beautifully illustrated and resonate with readers of all ages.
